How Do You Calm The Monster In Your Mind?


Do you really know what is going on in your mind?

When I started to notice what was going on in mine, I was appalled and dismayed. I felt that most of the time, I had a repetitive, belligerent child on my hands. Or I should say in my head.

How did I create this and more importantly - how do I manage it? I was realistic enough to know that 'control' of this mind was out of the question.

And I had another big problem. Now that I was aware of this 'monster upstairs,' there was no turning back. I couldn't put my awareness on mute. I could ignore it sometimes, or get hung up on one of those mental 'rollercoasters.'

You know. It is like the one where you tell everyone you know of how horrible the traffic was on the way to work. Or how upset I was about what my husband said about my hair this morning.

I could blissfully lose myself in the drama of the moment, but this awareness of the contents of my mind would rear its ugly head every once in a while and I would be faced with this disturbing content. Especially in quiet moments.

And this is where the big "M" word came in - meditation. Really! With this mind?

The Dark Side of Cosmetic Surgery

Both surgical and non-surgical forms of cosmetic enhancement procedures have been on the rise in the United States.  In an annual report that was released by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) it came to light that in 2007 eleven million seven hundred thousand cosmetic procedures were performed in the US.

This was more than a 400% increase in the number of procedures that have been performed since 1997.  Although 9.9 million (approximately 82%) were non-surgical procedures such as laser skin rejuvenation, injectable fillers, and Botox, the balance - 1.8 million - were primarily for popular cosmetic surgery procedures such as liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tucks, and nose reshaping.

As the number of plastic surgery procedures has increased so have the rates of disfigurement, injury, and death that were cause by improperly supervised staff and untrained and/or inexperienced or negligent doctors and nurses.

Cosmetic surgery is a very profitable business.  There are doctors who aggressively market their services.  Some of these doctors want to meet with these prospective clients so that they can talk to them about undergoing pricey procedures.  And there have been times when these medical practitioners have disregarded their patient's existing health conditions and prior medical history in order to turn a profit.

And to make matters worse, in order to take advantage of this booming market, there are a lot of nurses and doctors who perform cosmetic procedures in their offices without having the necessary certification, necessary training, or appropriate emergency medical care available.

Homemade Tortillas Are The Delight Of The Dinner Table!


The daily bread. There was a time when every cook who was responsible for the family meals, either kneaded bread, whipped up a quick batch of biscuts or rolled out tortillas on a daily basis. Times have changed and breads of all kind are now readily available on the grocery shelf. This is a wonderful thing, but there are breads that just don't hold a candle to what you can put together at home. Tortillas top this list!

I cook a lot of Mexican style dinners, and if I dare try to slip in store bought tortillas, well the groans and complaints make me wish I had gone to the small amount of trouble it takes to bake a batch... Because there is no comparison! Tortillas are a simple food...flour, fat, water, salt, and that's it! However, when these humble ingredients are  mixed together in the proper way, suddenly they are transformed into a delicious soft and tender wrap for savory chicken, spicy beef, tender pork, or any type of meat, fish, vegetable or even fruit that you can think of!

Tender and tasty flour tortillas can be used as a side bread for dipping, the main attraction to hold the contents of dinner, or just as a snack, warmed up and spread with soft creamy butter. I've even created spectacular tortilla desserts that my family clammers for! My homemade tortillas are a hit as my contribution to potlucks, delightful as gifts, and have become my signature dish. Everyone would be surprised if they knew how simple and quick they really are to make!

If you want to surprise and delight your family and friends, fresh tender flour tortillas are a great way to do it. I started making them long ago, and now that my kids are all grown and out on their own, it is the one recipe that they have ALL called home about. Every one of them has finally learned all my tips and techniques, and the tradition goes on! Making something as simple as the daily bread, not on a daily basis, but as a special treat is what memories are made of. Whether it's the biscuts that my Grandmother taught me to make, or the tortilla techniques that I have passed on to my children, it's worth the effort, and a real pleasure to see the delight that good simple food can bring.

Orthodontics: How to Brush Your Teeth and Floss

Everyone brushes their teeth but few people brush them properly. It's more than brushing twice daily, it comes down to technique, length of time and some other important factors. Read on to become a tooth brushing professional.

1. Time: It takes two full minutes or more to properly brush your teeth. Most people brush their teeth for only thirty seconds and only achieve a quarter or their proper tooth care as a result. Use a stopwatch, or listen to a short song while brushing to get a better sense of how long it should take.

2. Technique: Brush gently, don't scrub. Short, little circular strokes do a great job of removing plaque. Pay extra attention to your molars, all around the gumline and crowns, fillings and other areas of restoration. Begin with the outer areas of your upper teeth, then do the sameyou're your lower teeth. Clean the insides after that, and finally clean the chewing areas.

3. Tongue: Brushing your tongue - or even better, buying a tongue scraper - will immediately give you better breath. Usually your tongue is kind of white. That is masticated food. Gross, right? Scrape it off for more kissable, less embarrassing breath.

4. Toothbrush: Use a soft, small toothbrush - the head should be a perfect fit for one tooth. Big headed toothbrushes can't hit the more difficult, harder-to-reach areas of the mouth. Replace your toothbrush after it starts to show wear, or after every three months.

Flossing:

1. The wrap: You will need about 18 inches of floss for a solid wrap around your fingers. Wind it around your middle fingers with an inch or two at the ends.

2. Technique: Slide it up and down between your teeth. Go beneath the gumline or you may miss important gunk. Wrap the dirty floss around your finger to use clean floss for each tooth.

3. Dental pics: You can also use dental pics or a floss holder to stimulate your gums and reach between teeth with more ease if you have trouble flossing.

Your dental hygiene is in accord with how much you work at it. That is, like everything else in life, if you work hard at keeping your teeth clean, you will have nice clean teeth. For some that means brushing after every meal. For others it means developing a better floss technique. Either way, by working at keeping your teeth clean, your orthodontist will feel much better about looking inside your mouth, and your trips to the dentist will be less painful and less frequent. While it may require even more time and dedication if you have Medicaid Braces or Invisalign, it will be worth it once your braces are removed and you have the most beautiful smile on the block.
